  • Royal wedding bouquet rests on Warrior’s grave

    Princess Eugenie has sent the bouquet she carried during her wedding ceremony to Westminster Abbey to rest on the Grave of the Unknown Warrior.

    Their Royal Highnesses The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall attended a service to mark the centenary of the burial of the Unknown Warrior at Westminster Abbey on 11th November 2020.

    Albert Edward, eldest son of Queen Victoria, was born in 1841. His coronation, with his wife Alexandra of Denmark, was held on 9th August 1902.

    Just inside the gates of the south ambulatory is an arched recess containing the supposed tomb of Sebert, King of the East Saxons.

    Priest/Minister

    Peter Birch, clergyman, and his wife Martha are buried in the south transept. Martha has a white marble Baroque wall tablet near Chaucer's tomb.

  • Samuel Langford

    On the west wall of St Margaret's church is a memorial for Samuel Langford, by sculptor William Stanton. The inscription panel is flanked by columns.

  • Alan Campbell Don

    Dean and Priest/Minister

    Alan Campbell Don K.C.V.O. was Dean of Westminster from 1946 to 1959 and his ashes are buried in the nave. He was born in Scotland.

  • Mary Beaufoy

    In the north aisle of the nave is a marble monument, by sculptor Grinling Gibbons, to Mary Beaufoy. She was buried on 17th July 1705.

  • Gervase and Martha Price

    Musician

    Gervase Price, musician, and his wife Martha are buried in the north aisle of the nave, not far from the grave of Ben Jonson.

  • George Eliot (Mary Ann Evans)

    Writer and Novelist

    On 21st June 1980 a memorial stone for George Eliot (Mary Ann Evans), novelist, was unveiled in Poets' Corner. The sculptor was John Skelton.

  • Sir Robert Taylor

    Architect

    On the wall of the south transept is a memorial to eminent architect Sir Robert Taylor. It is of marble enriched with festoons of flowers.

  • W.H. Smith

    Politician

    In St Margaret's church Westminster, on the north side near the organ, is a stained glass window to William Henry Smith, newsagent and politician.

  • Lewis Carroll

    Writer and Poet

    On 17th December 1982 a memorial in Poets’ Corner was dedicated to the poet and writer universally known as Lewis Carroll.

  • Percy Bysshe Shelley

    Poet

    In Poets' Corner is a mural tablet with a lyre to Romantic poet Percy Shelley. This is joined to an identical tablet for John Keats.

  • Owen and Henry Chadwick

    Writer, Historian and Priest/Minister

    A memorial tablet to brothers Owen and Henry Chadwick was unveiled by Henry's widow on 1st February 2018 in the south quire aisle of Westminster Abbey.

    A memorial stone to Sir Ernest Shackleton, one of the most celebrated Antarctic Explorers of the twentieth century, was dedicated at Westminster Abbey on Thursday 15th February 2024.

    A Service to Dedicate a Memorial to C S Lewis, writer, scholar and apologist, was held at Westminster Abbey on Friday 22nd November 2013.
