Westminster Abbey’s Choir sang for Pope Benedict XVI, with the Cappella Musicale Pontificia ‘Sistina’, the Sistine Chapel Choir, at the Papal Mass marking the Solemnity of St Peter and St Paul in St Peter’s Basilica, Rome, on Friday 29th June, a historic occasion of great significance for Anglican-Catholic relations.

Westminster Abbey Choir to sing at St Peter's in Rome

Westminster Abbey’s world-famous choir arrives in Italy this week (Tuesday 26th June) for a tour of Rome and Montecassino which will include singing for Pope Benedict XVI, with the Cappella Musicale Pontificia ‘Sistina’, the Sistine Chapel Choir, at the Papal Mass marking the Solemnity of St Peter and St Paul (Friday 29th June) in St Peter’s Basilica.

Thomas Finny, an assistant carpenter, was buried in the Dark Cloister area, near the Undercroft door. He worked for the Abbey from at least 1753.

St Margaret's welcomes Coptic Christians for New Year service.

Musician
Thomas Vaughan was a tenor singer in the Westminster Abbey Choir 1804-1843 and was buried on 17th January 1843 in the west cloister.

The famous actor manager Thomas Betterton was buried in the East Cloister "over against the third pillar from the south end next to the garden".

A memorial of slate was unveiled for Thomas Clarkson, abolitionist, on 26th September 1996, being placed between the statues of William Wilberforce and Stamford Raffles.

Soldier
Thomas Hesilrige was buried in the south ambulatory on 30th October 1651 but his body, with other followers of Oliver Cromwell, was disinterred.

New memorial for Ignatius Sancho
Saturday, 14th October 2023
Charles Ignatius Sancho who escaped from a background of slavery and rose to distinction in Georgian London, will be honoured when a new memorial is dedicated in St Margaret’s Church.

Poet
A memorial stone to Welsh poet Dylan Thomas was unveiled on 1st March 1982. It lies between memorials to Lord Byron and George Eliot.

Musician
Thomas Finell, Lay Vicar of Westminster Abbey, was buried in the south cloister but he has no marker. Children were baptized in St Margaret's Westminster.
