Warburg grant secures final funding for Cosmati restoration

As the Cosmati pavement enters its final phase of conservation, a charitable foundation has awarded the project a surprise grant of £215,000 which has secured the final funding for the restoration process. The donation was the gift of 'Sir Siegmund Warburg’s Voluntary Settlement'.

John Thorndyke
John Thorndike (Thorndyke), younger brother of Abbey clergyman Herbert Thorndike, emigrated to New England in the early 1630s and married Elizabeth Stratton. He is buried in the east cloister of the Abbey.

The Roman Catholic divine Dr Pierre Le Courayer is buried in the south cloister. On the wall nearby is a marble tablet with his monogram.

Writer, Architect and Historian
In the west cloister of Westminster Abbey is a memorial stone to William Richard Lethaby, Surveyor of the Fabric of the Abbey, 1857-1931.

James Harrington, scholar, was buried on the south side of the chancel of St Margaret's but his gravestone was later moved to the north side.

In the west aisle of the north transept of Westminster Abbey is a memorial to Vice-Admiral Charles Watson. This was designed by James Stuart.

Poet
The poet Sir William Davenant is buried in Poets' Corner. He was buried in the grave from which his rival Thomas May had been ejected.

P.G. Wodehouse
Writer, Playwright and Novelist
A memorial to Sir P.G. Wodehouse was unveiled at Westminster Abbey in September 2019. The stone is near the memorial to Noel Coward.

Channel 4 to screen Time Team dig Sunday 18th April

Channel 4 kicks off the new series of Time Team on Sunday 18th April at 5.30pm with Westminster Abbey as the first show. Time Team visited the Abbey in September 2009 and dug up a section of North Green looking for evidence of Henry III’s sacristy.
