    Four Knights Grand Cross of the Most Honourable Order of the Bath were installed in the Abbey’s Lady Chapel on Monday 19th July..

  • George Bryan

    Soldier

    In the north choir aisle of Westminster Abbey is a monument to Captain George Bryan. The white marble tablet shows a kneeling woman mourning.

  • Pelham Humfrey

    Musician and Composer

    Musician and composer Pelham Humfrey is buried in the east cloister near the door into the church. The inscription on his gravestone has worn away.

  • William Spottiswood

    William Spottiswoode, printer, died of typhoid fever and was buried in the south transept, near his ancestor John Spottiswood, Archbishop of St Andrews.

  • Sir Andrew Dudley

    Politician, Sailor and Soldier

    Sir Andrew Dudley, politician and brother of John, 1st Duke of Northumberland, was buried in St Margaret's Westminster but he has no marker.

  • VE Day

    On 8th May 1945, Winston Churchill announced that the Second World War in Europe at an end. This was VE Day or Victory in Europe Day.

  • Edward Carpenter

    Writer, Dean and Priest/Minister

    The ashes of Dr Edward Frederick Carpenter K.C.V.O., a much loved Dean of Westminster, are buried in the nave near the graves of his predecessors.

  • Thomas Campbell

    Writer and Poet

    Poet and writer Thomas Campbell is buried in Poets' Corner. He has a life sized marble statue near Shakespeare's memorial, by sculptor W. Calder Marshall.

  • John Laurence

    Soldier

    In the west cloister is a monument to John Laurence (Lawrence). This was originally in the south walk, where he was presumably buried, but was moved.

  • St Margaret of Antioch

    the bells of St Margaret's Church are rung for St Margaret's Day (transferred from Sunday 20th July) following Evensong at about 5.45 pm
