  • Dedication of Peal Boards

    There are ten principal ringers for the Abbey's ten bells, which are rung for the major church festivals, for special services and for notable occasions such as the anniversaries of HM The Queen's accession, coronation and wedding.

    The Abbey Choir has released a new CD of choral works by Ralph Vaughan Williams, Sir James MacMillan and Sir John Tavener.

  • James I and Anne of Denmark

    James I and Anne of Denmark are both buried in Westminster Abbey. But neither has a monument. Their funeral effigies still remain in the Abbey collection.

    Burial James died on 27th March 1625 at Theobald's Park in Hertfordshire and his funeral took place at the Abbey on 17th May.

  • George and Nicholas Monck

    Priest/Minister, Soldier and Sailor

    General George Monck and his brother NIcholas are both buried in Westminster Abbey. The General's funeral armour is on display.

    He died 3rd January 1670 but the funeral did not take place until 30th April as the king had offered, but failed, to pay the expenses.

  • Thomas Whitby

    Thomas Whitby, of Hounslow in Middlesex, was buried in the south ambulatory on 25th January 1622 but he has no monument or marker.

  • Jacinto de Castro

    Statesman

    Don Jacinto Borges Pereira de Castro, Envoy Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the King of Portugal to the Court of Britain, was buried in the nave.

    The burial was private, the funeral according to Roman Catholic rites having been performed beforehand at his house in Great Queen Street.

  • Henry VII and Elizabeth of York

    Henry VII’s coronation took place in October 1485. Henry VII and his wife Elizabeth of York were the first monarchs to be buried in the Abbey’s Lady Chapel.

  • Earl Mountbatten of Burma

    Sailor and Diplomat

    Just inside the west door of Westminster Abbey, at the base of a pillar is a memorial to the Earl and Countess Mountbatten of Burma.

    His funeral was held at the Abbey and he was buried at Romsey in Hampshire, near Broadlands his country home.

  • Henry V and Catherine de Valois

    Henry’s tomb is below his elaborate chantry chapel in Westminster Abbey. His funeral armour and the effigy of his wife, Catherine de Valois, can be seen in the Abbey Galleries.

    The coffin, on which lay his funeral effigy (which does not survive), was then brought to the Abbey on 7th November 1422 for burial.

  • Queen Alexandra, wife of Edward VII

    Queen Alexandra was born in 1844, the daughter of King Christian IX of Denmark. With her husband Edward VII, she was crowned in 1902.

  • George Pollock

    Soldier

    Sir George Pollock, army officer, was buried in the nave, to the west of Lord Clyde. He was the fifth son of David Pollock.

    In 1871 he became Constable of the Tower of London and ten Yeoman Warders led his funeral procession in Westminster Abbey on 16th October 1872.

  • Henry Grattan

    Statesman

    Henry Grattan, a statesman and defender of the rights of Ireland, was buried next to Charles James Fox in the north transept of Westminster Abbey.

    Abbey funeral fee book records "died Sunday June 4 1820 at his late English place of residence no 68 Baker Street, Portman Square aged 74 years, to be buried...

  • Walter Porter

    Musician and Composer

    Walter Porter, singer and musician, was Master of the Choristers at Westminster Abbey from 1639-44. He was buried in St Margaret's on 30th November 1659.

    In 1603 he sang as an Abbey chorister at the funeral of Elizabeth I and later sang tenor in the Chapel Royal choir, attending James I's funeral in 1625.

  • Edward IV

    Edward IV was crowned in Westminster Abbey on 28th June 1461. His queen Elizabeth Woodville was crowned in 1465. Their infant daughter Margaret has a small monument in St Edward's chapel.

  • Samuel Birch

    Physician

    Samuel Birch was buried in the north porch area on 20th June 1719 aged 72. But he has no monument or marker.

    The papers also said he was 96 but the age given in the Abbey's Funeral Book is more likely to be correct.

  • Lady Anne Bertie

    Lady Anne Bertie was buried in St Michael's chapel at Westminster Abbey on 22nd March 1661 but she has no marker or monument.

    Her funeral took place at night and the Precentor's book records that three dozen torches and nine pounds of wax candles were used.

    In 1505, the Lady Margaret Beaufort, mother of King Henry VII, and founder of the Tudor dynasty, re-founded the college of God's House (first established in 1437 for the training of grammar school masters) naming it Christ's College.

    Her friend and confessor Bishop John Fisher said of her at her funeral: Every one that knew her loved her, and everything that she said or did became her.
