Richard II portrait to go on loan to British Museum in 2012

Westminster Abbey’s portrait of Richard II is back in place at the west end of the nave after a conservation assessment carried out by Marie-Louise Sauerberg of Cambridge University’s Hamilton Kerr Institute and funded by the Bank of America Merrill Lynch Art Conservation Programme.

Richard Briers to narrate Crucifixus pro Nobis

The distinguished actor Richard Briers will be the narrator at Crucifixus Pro Nobis, the Abbey’s meditation in words and music on the Passion and Death of Jesus Christ on Tuesday 11th March at 7.00pm.

Colonel Solomon Richards was buried in the north cloister of Westminster Abbey on 6th October 1691 but nothing marks his grave.

Richard Gouland
Priest/Minister
The Reverend Richard Gouland, Keeper of the Library at Westminster Abbey, is buried in the north cloister. His marble monument includes a skull and drapery.

Ashes of Stephen Hawking buried in the Abbey
Friday, 15th June 2018
A Service of Thanksgiving for Stephen Hawking was held at Westminster Abbey on 15th June 2018, during which his ashes were interred in the Nave.

In a window recess of the south aisle of the nave is a large monument of marble to the memory of Rear Admiral Richard Tyrrell.

On the south wall of St Margaret's church Westminster is a memorial tablet to Richard Willis and members of his family.

Ashes of Dr Wesley Carr buried in the Abbey
Wednesday, 25th April 2018
Evensong on Tuesday 24th April 2018 was followed by the burial of the ashes of the Very Reverend Dr Wesley Carr KCVO, who was Dean of Westminster from 1997 to 2006.

Richard II and Anne of Bohemia
Richard was crowned in Westminster Abbey on 16th July 1377 aged 10. He married Anne of Bohemia in January 1382 and both are buried in the Abbey. His portrait hangs in the nave.

Richard III was crowned in the Abbey on 6th July 1483. Almost the entire peerage of England was present at what was a magnificent spectacle.

Politician
Richard Warburton, descended from the ancient family of Warburton, was buried in the south cloister on 29th October 1771, but he has no readable gravestone.

Richard Knevet was a gentleman pensioner of Elizabeth I and was buried in St John the Evangelist's chapel at Westminster Abbey in 1559.

‘They buried him among the kings’
When Charles Dickens died at his home in Kent on 9th June 1870, it was presumed that he would be buried in Rochester Cathedral or in one of the nearby parish churches at Cobham or Shorne. This, after all, was what the author of some of the greatest novels in the English language had wanted.

Richard Lucas

Dr Richard Lucas is buried in the south transept. In 1677 he published the first of many works, Practical Christianity, and was a noted preacher.
