William Wilberforce, MP, who took up the cause for the abolition of slavery was buried in the north transept. Samuel was Dean of Westminster and Basil was Archdeacon.
William Wilberforce was buried in the north transept of Westminster Abbey on 3rd August 1833.

Statesmen’s Aisle
The north transept of Westminster Abbey is known as Statesmen's Aisle due to the many memorials there to politicians.
The statue to William Wilberforce is in the north choir aisle rather than near his grave in the transept.

Her Royal Highness Princess Eugenie of York attended a wreath laying to commemorate the work of William Wilberforce and mark the United Kingdom's commitment to combat modern slavery at Westminster Abbey on Wednesday 12th October 2016.

Abolitionist
A memorial of slate was unveiled for Thomas Clarkson, abolitionist, on 26th September 1996, being placed between the statues of William Wilberforce and Stamford Raffles.
He laboured tirelessly in this cause, working closely with William Wilberforce, but the act abolishing the trade was not passed until 1807.
