Lord Burghley’s legacy celebrated

HRH Princess Alexandra attended a Service of Thanksgiving to celebrate the lasting legacy of William Cecil, Lord Burghley, in Westminster Abbey on Wednesday 22nd June 2022.

William IV
William was a son of George III and Queen Charlotte. He and Queen Adelaide were crowned in Westminster Abbey on 8th September 1831.

James II was born on 14th October 1633. His coronation with his queen, Mary of Modena, took place at Westminster Abbey on 23rd April 1685.

Richard III was crowned in the Abbey on 6th July 1483. Almost the entire peerage of England was present at what was a magnificent spectacle.

King Edward VIII abdicated the throne before he could be crowned and was succeeded by his brother King George VI.

Arthur Herbert, Baron Torbay and Earl of Torrington, was buried on 22nd April 1716 in the "south aisle within the tombs" ie. the south ambulatory.

William and Mary Bulmer and their son William are buried in the west cloister but their memorials perished long ago and the graves are unmarked.

In the north aisle of the nave is a memorial to civil engineer John Smeaton. It includes an inlay of Smeaton's famous work, Eddystone lighthouse.

The Honourable Lieutenant Colonel Roger Townshend has a monument in the south aisle of the nave. He is buried at Albany, New York.

The ashes of Sir Charles Peers are buried in the Islip chapel. He was Surveyor of the Fabric at the Abbey from 1935 to 1951.

In the west cloister is a monument to John Laurence (Lawrence). This was originally in the south walk, where he was presumably buried, but was moved.

John of Waltham, bishop of Salisbury from 1388 was buried in St Edward the Confessor’s chapel in Westminster Abbey by order of Richard II.

The American genealogist Colonel Joseph Lemuel Chester has a memorial in the south choir aisle. It is of marble and was put up in 1883.

Poet
Poet William Mason has a memorial in Poets' Corner. It is in the east aisle near the memorial to Thomas Gray, whose epitaph he composed.

P.G. Wodehouse
Writer, Playwright and Novelist
A memorial to Sir P.G. Wodehouse was unveiled at Westminster Abbey in September 2019. The stone is near the memorial to Noel Coward.

Andrew Nethsingha: Appointed Organist and Master of the Choristers in January 2023, Andrew Nethsingha is the Abbey’s director of music and principal conductor of the Abbey Choir.
