A season of inspiring events, hosted by Westminster Abbey Institute this autumn, will explore the long history of democracy in the UK.

For over a thousand years, the Abbey has stood at the heart of public life. Around it have developed the principal institutions of state: Parliament, the Civil Service, and the legal system. The precursor to the House of Commons first sat in the Abbey’s medieval Chapter House.

As the UK’s democracy continues to evolve, Westminster Abbey Institute invites you to the place where it began, to join a conversation about democracy’s past, present, and future.

Booking (free) is open now for all the events in the season:

A place for gathering, conversing and remembering

The long story of democracy in the UK has been shaped by people who have found in the Abbey a place for gathering, conversing, and remembering. William Caxton established England’s first printing press within the Abbey’s grounds. Political rivals are memorialised together in its aisles, as are poets and orators who contested democracy’s claim to representation when it fell short, or who defended democracy when it was in peril.

Today, by convening spaces for meaningful dialogue and inner reflection, Westminster Abbey Institute strives to nurture and sustain the moral reserve of all who serve in public life.

As the UK’s democracy continues to evolve, Westminster Abbey Institute invites you to the place where it began, to join a conversation about democracy’s past, present, and future. Why does democracy matter? What are democratic values, practices, and institutions really for? How can democracy endure?
