Nave ceiling repairs reveal spectacular views

Spectacular views stretching the full length of the Abbey are being revealed as essential repairs to the nave ceiling take place for the first time in more than six decades.

From a scaffolding platform rising more than 100 feet (31 metres) above the floor, the work also offers a rare opportunity to see architectural details decorating the nave up close while repairs are carried out.

The work, being carried out by the Abbey stonemason, focus on the careful conservation of the historic fabric, including the consolidation of the stonework, the repointing of lime mortar where deterioration has occurred over time, and careful surface cleaning.

The last time work of this kind was carried out was after the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II in 1953, when an extensive programme of cleaning and repairs was undertaken. The necessary cleaning and repairs were so extensive that they took 11 years to complete.

Work to build the present nave began in 1376 and it was finally finished in around 1517. It is home to some of the most significant memorials in the Abbey, including the Grave of the Unknown Warrior.
