Lunchtime choral concert: Armada!

Date Time Location Price
Wednesday, 24th June 20261:00pm - 2:00pmSt Margaret's Church £10

Join us as the singers of St Margaret's Consort transport us with music from 1588.

1588 - A pivotal year in European history: England and Spain divided on the naval battlefield, yet united in enjoying a golden era of music. This musical face-off sets our programme of exquisite music of some of the great Spanish and English composers of the era – Tallis and Byrd for the English, Victoria and Guerrero representing the Spanish.
The setting is St Margaret’s Church, a mere 65 years old at the time of the Armada, and a stunning architectural expression of the era. Under the altar lie the remains of Sir Walter Raleigh, a member of the Queen’s Council of War in 1588. He and Queen Elizabeth I are depicted in the church's great west window.
The St Margaret's Consort
The St Margaret’s Consort is the professional vocal ensemble which provides choral music for the many high-profile services which take place in St Margaret’s Church, Westminster Abbey; in particular, the Consort provides the music for celebrations of the life and works of prominent Parliamentarians, due to the close links St Margaret’s has enjoyed with both Houses of Parliament over the centuries.
The lower voices of the Consort also sing regularly with the St Margaret’s Choristers, the Abbey’s first girl choristers to take part in its centuries-long tradition of choral worship, founded in 2023.

Greg Morris, Conductor

Greg Morris is Director of Music at St Margaret’s Church. He was responsible for establishing the Abbey’s new choir for girls, the St Margaret’s Choristers of Westminster Abbey, in 2023, and conducting the choir and leading their continued development is the major part of his role. He is also the principal conductor of the St Margaret’s Consort, and oversees and directs the music in special services in St Margaret’s itself and in the Chapel of St Mary Undercroft in the Houses of Parliament.
