Charles Twitty

Charles Twitty was buried on the south side of the chancel in St Margaret's church Westminster on 11th April 1706. His entry in the burial register reads: "Charles Twytty, a great benefactor to Green Coat and Grey Coat Hospitals and to other poor". He has no marker or memorial.

His Life

He was born in Abingdon in about 1641, where he later endowed some alms houses. On moving to London he became deputy auditor to the Exchequer and governor of St Margaret's Hospital Westminster, more commonly known as the Green Coat School due to the green uniform that was worn. The Grey Coat Hospital, again known after the colour of the uniforms, later became a girls' school and still exists in Westminster.

A marriage allegation shows he was to marry Sarah, daughter of Richard Appleby of Shropshire on 21st September 1664. It is not recorded as taking place in St Margaret's.

Sarah was buried in St Margaret's on 29th October 1706.

A Thomas Twitty was buried on 13th March 1707 but it is not known if he was related.
