  • Abbey collection to support Cambridge University scholarship

    Thursday, 21st November 2013

    A collection taken at a service of thanksgiving at Westminster Abbey to mark the 50th anniversary of the death of C S Lewis will be used to support a new scholarship at the University of Cambridge in honour of the writer, scholar and Christian apologist.

    In Poets' Corner is a bust in memory of poet and critic Samuel Taylor Coleridge. He is buried at Highgate.

    Poet

    A white marble life size figure of poet William Wordsworth is in Poets' Corner, Westminster Abbey. The figure is seated with crossed legs.

  • Sir Henry Barnard

    Soldier

    In the north transept is a memorial stone to six soldiers, including General Sir Henry Barnard, who served and died in the Indian Mutiny.

  • Jane Austen

    Writer and Novelist

    Jane Austen is buried in Winchester Cathedral but a small tablet was unveiled to her memory in Poets' Corner, Westminster Abbey, on 17th December 1967.

    Poet and Composer

    A marble bust of Scotland’s national poet Robert Burns is on the wall of Poets’ Corner near memorials to Shakespeare and Scottish poet James Thomson.

  • Dame Peggy Ashcroft

    Actor

    A memorial stone to the actress Dame Peggy Ashcroft was unveiled in Poets' Corner in 2005. The stone is near Laurence Olivier’s grave.

    Above the tomb of Geoffrey Chaucer in Poets' Corner is a white marble monument to politician John Roberts. The memorial was erected in 1776.

    Writer

    A memorial to author and critic John Ruskin was unveiled in Poets' Corner on 8th February 1902. The bronze roundel encloses a portrait.

  • Marie Celeste Hora

    James Hora erected two memorials to his wife Marie Celeste - a stained glass window in Westminster Abbey and a small tablet in St Margaret's.

  • Gilbert Murray

    Classical scholar Gilbert Murray, renowned for his translations of Greek plays, was buried in Poets' Corner in Westminster Abbey on 5th July 1957.

    A bust of eminent novelist Sir Walter Scott was unveiled in Poets' Corner in 1897. It was the gift of a group of Scott's admirers.

    A memorial to novelist and poet D.H. Lawrence was unveiled in Poets' Corner on 16th November 1985. It was presented by the D.H. Lawrence Society.

  • Edward Lear

    Artist and Writer

    A memorial stone to Edward Lear, writer, artist and ornithologist, was unveiled in Poets' Corner Westminster Abbey on 6th June 1988 by Sir Hugh Casson.

  • Connop Thirlwall

    Historian and Priest/Minister

    Connop Thirlwall, historian and bishop of St David’s, is buried in Poets’ Corner in Westminster Abbey, in the same grave as his friend George Grote.

  • Dylan Thomas

    Poet

    A memorial stone to Welsh poet Dylan Thomas was unveiled on 1st March 1982. It lies between memorials to Lord Byron and George Eliot.
