    Peter Ilbery was just 20 when he joined 455 Squadron of the RAF’s Coastal Command in 1945. Flying Hampdens and later Beaufighters, he and his Australian colleagues embarked on nightly operations against German U-boats during World War Two.

    From today, Westminster Abbey will be open on selected days to visitors, following the further easing of lockdown restrictions due to the coronavirus pandemic.

    Dates and times for visiting the Abbey have been confirmed until the end of June.

  • The Parliament Choir's Coronation Jubilee Concert

    The Parliament Choir's Coronation Jubilee Concert was switched from Westminster Hall to the Abbey at just 33 hours notice after two pieces of oak cladding fell 100ft from the hammer beam roof of the hall.

    Seating for 1,700 people went out as soon as tourist visiting ended and by 7.30pm on Wednesday all was ready for the arrival of HRH The Prince of Wales.

  • Abbey presents Pope with Missal volume

    Westminster Abbey presented Pope Benedict XVI with a magnificent bound volume of illustrations from its 14th century illuminated manuscript, the Litlyngton Missal, after the ecumenical service of evening prayer on Friday 17th September 2010.

    The Abbey has commissioned a set of velvet-bound editions of A World of Worship which will be presented to visiting Heads of State.

  • New Canon Theologian appointed

    It is announced today (Tuesday 21st December 2010) from 10 Downing Street that Her Majesty The Queen has approved the appointment of The Reverend Vernon White as a Canon of Westminster. He will become Canon Theologian in succession to the Reverend Canon Dr Nicholas Sagovsky, who will be leaving the Abbey in January.

    The Reverend Vernon White was installed as a Canon of Westminster at Evensong on Saturday 7th May 2011.

    He is the Abbey’s new Canon Theologian and also becomes a Visiting Professor in the Department of Theology & Religious Studies at King's College London.
