    Nicholas Hawksmoor, architect, was the Abbey’s Surveyor of the Fabric from 1723 but he is not buried here nor does he have any memorial tablet.

    On 8th May 1945, Winston Churchill announced that the Second World War in Europe at an end. This was VE Day or Victory in Europe Day.

    These included the 13th century Westminster Retable (England's oldest altarpiece), gilt bronze and oak tomb effigies, tapestries, manuscripts and statues.

    The Abbey’s west front will be floodlit in blood red as the sun goes down on the evening of Saturday 8th July to mark the eve of the 25th anniversary of the dedication of the modern martyrs.

    The ten statues stand above the Abbey's Great West Door and commemorate Christians who gave up their lives for their beliefs.
