William Loe

The Reverend Dr William Loe, alias Leo, was buried in Poets' Corner Westminster Abbey, near the entrance to St Faith's chapel on 21st September 1645. Unfortunately when a small stone was cut for him in the 19th century (he previously had no marker) the inscription said that he was a prebendary of Westminster, which is not correct. He was actually a prebendary of Gloucester cathedral and later Sub-Dean there.

He was possibly born in Kent and was educated at Oxford, becoming a doctor of divinity and master of the college school in Gloucester. Several of his sermons were published and a volume of his verses. He was also a chaplain to James I and pastor of the English church in Hamburg. In later life he served in Putney and Wandsworth in London. Nothing is known of his wife but they had a son William who died in 1679.
