John Herbert

The Reverend John Herbert was buried aged 45 in the north porch of Westminster Abbey on 30th October 1729. His wife Mary, daughter of Thomas Cullum and first wife of Sir Thomas Bromsall, was buried with him (as Dame Mary Bromsall) on 9th April 1730. But they have no readable gravestone or monument.

He was said to be a near relation of the Earl of Pembroke and was baptised at St Margaret's Westminster July 28th 1685, a son of Edward and Susanna. An infant sister was buried in the Abbey on 24th August 1688. He was educated at Westminster School and Oxford university and became vicar of Staverton in Gloucestershire. Later he was rector of Bideford and of Dolton in Devon, being installed a prebendary (clergyman) of Westminster in 1723. He was also rector of Beddington in Surrey. He appears to have had no children.
