Indian Civil Service

In the west cloister of Westminster Abbey is a stone and black marble memorial to members of the Indian Civil Service from 1858 to 1947. This was designed by Stephen Dykes Bower, the Abbey's Surveyor of the Fabric, and Lord Halifax gave the address at the service. He praised the "unequalled tradition of personal integrity and of devotion to duty.." of its members and said that "many who were trained in the services...are now serving the independent States of India, Pakistan and Burma". The inscription reads:

1858 1947 Here are commemorated the Civil Services of the Crown in India. Let them not be forgotten for they served India well. "What doth the Lord require of thee but to do justly and to love mercy"
