Ambrose Fisher

Ambrose Fisher, known as the blind scholar and author of A Defence of the Liturgy of the Church of England, is buried in the east cloister of Westminster Abbey, just in front of the entrance to the Library. He was educated at Cambridge and instituted to the rectory of Holy Trinity in Colchester, Essex in 1610. It seems he had been blind all his life and was brought up among Puritans. He is said to have been a tutor in the family of Dr Gabriel Grant, one of the prebendaries of Westminster which is presumably why he was buried here on 21st November 1617. The inscription on his stone is a modern one:

Beneath this stone was buried the blind scholar Ambrose Fisher 1617 author of A Defence of the Liturgy
