Sir William Berkeley

Vice Admiral Sir William Berkeley was buried in the north ambulatory of Westminster Abbey but has no marker or monument. He was a son of Sir Charles Berkeley, and Viscount Fitzharding, treasurer of Charles II's household, and his wife Penelope (Godolphin). He gained rapid promotion in the navy and rose to be Vice Admiral of the White [squadron] and Lt. Governor of Portsmouth. On 3rd June 1666 he was killed on board his ship Swiftsure while fighting the Dutch. Admiring his gallantry they took his body to lie in state in the large church in the Hague. The embalmed body was buried in the Abbey in August 1666. He was unmarried and died aged about 27.

His brothers John, Lord Fitzharding and Charles, Earl of Falmouth are also buried in the Abbey and two of his sisters.
