King and Queen of Spain visit Westminster Abbey

Prayers were said at the Grave of the Unknown Warrior and King Felipe VI laid a wreath in honour of the fallen of the two World Wars and more recent conflicts, before he and Queen Letizia were escorted on a tour of the Abbey by the Dean of Westminster, the Very Reverend Dr John Hall, and members of the Abbey Chapter.

The King and Queen viewed the tomb of Eleanor of Castile, the wife of Edward I, King of England from 1272 to 1307, near the Shrine of St Edward the Confessor. Eleanor, the daughter of Ferdinand III King of Castile, died in 1290 at the age of 46. Edward had twelve stone memorial crosses erected at the places where her funeral procession had rested on its way from Lincoln to the Abbey, the last at Charing Cross.

Following the tour, the Dean invited The King and Queen to sign the Distinguished Visitors’ Book.

Prince Harry was playing an official part in a State Visit to The Queen for the first time.
