The Coronation

To prepare for the Coronation of The King and Queen Consort we will be closed to visitors and worshippers from 25th April and will re-open on Monday 8th May. Services will take place in St Margaret's Church until Tuesday 2nd May.

    The 750th anniversary of the Simon de Montfort Parliament was remembered at Evensong in Westminster Abbey at 5.00 pm on Thursday 22nd January 2015.

  • Thomas Thirlby

    Priest/Minister

    Thomas Thirlby (c.1500-1570) was consecrated the first and only Bishop of the new short-lived diocese of Westminster in December 1540.

  • Sulcard

    Historian

    Sulcard was a monk at Westminster Abbey from around the 1050s and wrote a history of the monastery. He may have come from Rochester, Kent.

  • Abbot Edwin

    Abbot and Priest/Minister

    Edwin was Abbot of Westminster from 1049-1071 and was a friend and adviser to Edward the Confessor. He was at the consecration of Edward’s Abbey.

  • Walter Hines Page

    Diplomat

    In the vestibule of the Chapter House is a memorial to American Ambassador Walter Hines Page. He was ambassador in England during the Great War.

  • James Russell Lowell

    Writer and Poet

    In the vestibule of the Chapter House is a stone tablet and stained glass window in memory of James Russell Lowell, American poet and writer.

  • J.R. Clayton & Alfred Bell

    Artist

    John Richard Clayton and Alfred Bell designed several stained glass windows for Westminster Abbey and St Margaret's Church Westminster. Clayton also designed some memorials.

  • Joan Howson

    Artist

    Joan Howson (1885-1964), stained glass artist, worked on the re-glazing of the windows in the Chapter House at Westminster Abbey after wartime bomb damage.
