Dr Wesley Carr, former Dean of Westminster, dies

Dr Wesley Carr, who was Dean of Westminster from 1997 to 2006, has died peacefully aged 76.

Arthur Wesley Carr was educated at Dulwich College and at Jesus College, Oxford. He was ordained in 1967.

In 1987 Dr Carr became Dean of Bristol. Ten years later he moved to Westminster Abbey where, in 1997, he conducted the funeral service of Diana, Princess of Wales, and in 2002 of Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother and, in the same year, a memorial service for The Princess Margaret, Countess of Snowdon.

On his retirement as Dean of Westminster in 2006 he was appointed a Knight Commander of the Royal Victorian Order (KCVO) and moved to Romsey in Hampshire.

Dr Carr leaves a widow Natalie.

The Dean of Westminster, the Very Reverend Dr John Hall said:

Wesley Carr had a distinguished ministry in the Church of England and beyond the Church, especially thoughtful on the role of the clergy. His distinctive ministry as Dean of Westminster included several high profile occasions but also an active concern for the Abbey’s organisation in its day to day mission to worshippers and visitors.
