Elizabeth, Countess of Mexborough

A white marble memorial to Elizabeth, Countess of Mexborough is on the wall of St John the Baptist's chapel in Westminster Abbey. This shows a woman grieving beside an urn, with an heraldic achievement showing the arms of Savile and Stephenson. The sculptor was Robert Blore. The inscription reads:

Sacred to the memory of the Right Honourable Elizabeth Countess of Mexborough, who departed this life June the VII, in the year of our Lord MDCCCXXI, aged LIX, and whose remains are deposited in a vault adjoining this chapel. She left issue John, Viscount Pollington, and Sarah Elizabeth, Countess of Warwick. This monument is erected to her memory by her afflicted husband, John, Earl of Mexborough in token of his deep sorrow for her loss and of his sincere love and affection

Elizabeth was the daughter and heir of Henry Stephenson and married John Savile, 2nd Earl of Mexborough of Lifford in co. Donegal, Member of Parliament, on 30th September 1782. She was buried in the Darnley vault in Henry VII's chapel. in 1821, aged 59. Her son John succeeded as 3rd Earl.
