Henry Hugh Armstead

Henry Hugh Armstead (1828-1905) was one of the sculptors who worked on the new altar screen in Westminster Abbey designed by Sir George Gilbert Scott from 1867. His contributions were the four large statues of Moses, David, St Peter and St Paul and eight smaller figures flanking them and the scenes from the life of Christ along the top cornice. 

He was born in London a son of John Armstead and his wife Ann (Dyer) and worked closely with the firm of Clayton & Bell. His work can also be seen in the Palace of Westminster and at the Albert Memorial in Hyde Park. In the Abbey he executed the memorials to Archibald Campbell Tait and Lord John Thynne. He was buried in Highgate cemetery.
