Edmund Mason

Edmund Mason, Dean of Salisbury and tutor to the future Charles I, is buried in Westminster Abbey but the exact location is not known and he has no monument or gravestone. He was the third son of William Mason of Nottingham and his wife Julian (Stringer) and he married Elizabeth Barker but they had no children. His brother was Thomas Mason. After education at Cambridge he was a rector in several counties before becoming Dean of Salisbury in 1630. He was chaplain in ordinary to James I. But disagreements with his colleagues at Salisbury and an unwarranted attack on a Canon there caused him to leave and he resided at a house in Petty France, Westminster, dying there on 24th March 1635.
