The moment a king or queen becomes monarch is called accession, and happens when the previous monarch has died. It is a time of sadness and a period of mourning follows.
Accession combines the beginning of a new monarch’s reign and a continuation of the long tradition of the Royal Family. Since 1066 when William the Conqueror was crowned, Westminster Abbey has been the site of coronations for every monarch. For many monarchs, this celebration takes place soon after their accession but HM The Queen waited 18 months before she was crowned.
