Alured Clarke

The Reverend Alured Clarke D.D. was a prebendary (clergyman) at Westminster Abbey from 1731-1742. He was born in 1696 a son of Alured, of Godmanchester, and his wife Ann (Trimnell). His brother Charles was later a baron of the Exchequer. Educated at Cambridge he was ordained and was a prebendary at Winchester and at Exeter and chaplain to George I and George II. In 1741 he was made Dean of Exeter and was also a deputy Clerk of the Closet. He was also an author and co-founder of the Devon and Exeter Hospital and died unmarried on 31st May 1742. His grave "under a large old gravestone next the south angle of the late Duke of Newcastle's monument" in the north transept of the Abbey seems never to have been marked.
