Louis Henry Bedford

In the south aisle of St Margaret's Church Westminster is a small white marble tablet to soldier Louis Henry Bedford. The shield of arms shows "Quarterly 1&4 a chevron gules between two quatrefoils in chief and a trefoil slipped in base" for Bedford "2&3 a chevron sable between three fishes hauriant, a martlet for difference". The inscription reads:

In memory of Louis Henry Bedford, Captain in Her Majesty's 37th Regiment. Born 7th June 1819, killed on the 27th March 1858 in a sortie from the entrenchments at Azimghur in the East Indies.

His name is also inscribed on the Crimea and Indian Mutiny column opposite the west front of Westminster Abbey.

He was educated at Westminster School, as was his brother George Sale Bedford (1816-1870), and was son of George Bedford of Bedford Row in London, solicitor, and his second wife Harriet daughter of Colonel Sale. Louis joined the army in 1842 and served in the Indian Mutiny.
