Abbey marks Year of Engineering

A Service of Thanksgiving to celebrate The Year of Engineering 2018 was held at Westminster Abbey on Thursday 22nd November 2018 at noon.

The service was led by the Dean of Westminster, the Very Reverend Dr John Hall.

In the Bidding, The Dean of Westminster, the Very Reverend Dr John Hall, said:

We recognise the work engineers from the beginning of civilisation and the transformative power of engineering in whatever realm, including mechanical and civil, electrical, chemical, and bio-medical.

Testimonies were read by Roma Agrawal MBE, FICE, IstructE, Associate Director, AECOM and Colonel Deborah Porter FIHM MEng, Deputy Commander, Defence Medical Group. 

Andrew Wyllie, CBE FREng FICE, President, Institution of Civil Engineers read Genesis 1:26-end.

The Right Honourable Chris Grayling MP, Secretary of State for Transport, read 1 Corinthians 12: 4-11.

The Address was given by Professor Dame Ann Dowling OM DBE FREng FRS, President, Royal Academy of Engineering.

Prayers were led by the Reverend Christopher Stoltz, Minor Canon and Precentor and said by Emer Murnaghan OBE CEng CEnv MICE, Head of Responsible Sustainable Business, Graham Construction NI, Dr Geoffrey Freedman, CEng CEnv, Past President, Institution of Agricultural Engineers, Katie Cresswell-Maynard, Chief Executive, Engineers without Borders UK, Tony Roche CEng FREng, FIMechE, President, Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Nusrat Ghani MP, Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for Transport and Year of Engineering Minister and The Venerable David Stanton, Canon in Residence.

Yewande Akinola, Engineer and Innovator, Laing O'Rouke, IET Young Woman Engineer of the Year 2012 read What is an Engineer? by Varun Narayanan.

The service was sung by the Special Service Choir of Westminster Abbey directed by James O'Donnell, Organist and Master of the Choristers. The organ was played by Peter Holder, Sub-Organist and before the service by Alexander Hamilton, Organ Scholar.

There was a retiring collection in aid of Engineers without Borders UK.
