Sir George Hope

Rear Admiral Sir George Hope was buried in the centre part of the nave of Westminster Abbey and his white marble monument is in the nearby north west tower chapel. This consists of a pyramid with various naval trophies, coils of rope and cannonballs, with a coat of arms at the top and is by sculptor Peter Turnerelli. Lord Melville and Sir Malcolm Hope were concerned in its erection. The inscription reads:

Sacred to the memory of Rear Admiral Sir George Hope K.C.B. [Knight of the Order of the Bath]. Erected by several captains of the Royal Navy who served under him as midshipmen

George was born on 6th July 1767, a son of Hon. Charles Hope Vere Hope, a son of the Earl of Hopetoun and his third wife Helen (Dunbar). He rose to the rank of Rear Admiral in 1811 and was knighted. He was one of the Lords of the Admiralty from 1812 and was twice married with children. He died on 2nd May 1818.
