George Whicher

George Whicher is buried in the east cloister of Westminster Abbey. A marble tablet on the wall gives this inscription:

Here lieth the body of Mr George Whicher, Yeoman of His Maties. [Majesty's] Chappel Royal, who died 4 Feb. Ano. 1681 & built & endowed an Almshous for 6 poor men in this parish of St Margarets Westmr.

The date of death is called 1682 in New Style dating.

He was the youngest yeoman of the Vestry at the Chapel Royal in 1660 and died as the eldest. His sister was Susan (Spurling) but it appears he never married. His almshouses were originally in what is now called Caxton Street in Westminster but these were demolished about 1840 and new houses acquired in Lambeth, which still exist. His charity was amalgamated with that set up for almswomen by Judith Kifford.
