Toby Jessel Service
A Service of Thanksgiving for the life and work of Toby Jessel will be held in St Margaret’s Church on Thursday 30th May 2019.
Former Conservative Member of Parliament, Toby Jessel, who died on 3rd December 2018, aged 84, was the great-grandson of the 1st Viscount Bearsted, founder of Shell.
Educated at Royal Naval College, Dartmouth and Baillol College, Oxford, Toby was elected as the Member of Parliament for Twickenham at the 1970 general election, a seat he held for 27 years. Music vied with politics as his passion and he raised a great deal of support for children’s charities performing piano concertos, at St John’s Smith Square.
The tragic death of his only daughter who was killed in a car accident aged 5 made him determined to see through legislation for the compulsory wearing of car seatbelts, which has saved many thousands of lives.
In 1980 he married the actress Eira Heath who survives him.
