A Service of Thanksgiving for the life and work of Sir Donald Gosling, KCVO, will be held at the Abbey at Noon on Wednesday 11th December 2019.

Sir Donald Gosling KCVO (2nd March 1929 – 16th September 2019) was a British Vice Admiral, businessman, and benefactor to naval charities.

He joined the Royal Navy during the latter part of World War II, serving in the Mediterranean on board HMS Leander. After the war, he founded and co-chaired the business that was to become National Car Parks until the company was sold in 1998.

In January 1993 he was appointed honorary Captain of the Royal Naval Reserve by HM The Queen and then subsequently promoted to Commodore and then to Honorary Rear Admiral of the Reserve. He also had involvement with the White Ensign Association, serving as Chairman from 1979 to 1983, Vice President from 1983 to 1987 and then as President on the council of management under the Charity's Patron, HRH The Prince of Wales.

In 2004, he was awarded a KCVO for services to the Duke of Edinburgh's Award and the Outward Bound Trust. Eight years later, in 2012, Sir Donald was made Vice Admiral of the United Kingdom.

The biggest challenge we face is actually time – getting all our work done alongside the daily routine of the Abbey as a working church, visitor attraction and home to 1,000 years of history.
