A service to celebrate the 150th anniversary of Peabody and the work of its founder George Peabody was held at Westminster Abbey on Thursday 29th March at 11.00 am.
One of London’s oldest and largest housing associations, Peabody was founded in 1862 by the remarkable American banker, diplomat and philanthropist George Peabody. The Peabody Group owns and manages a portfolio of 20,000 properties across the capital, providing affordable homes for some 50,000 people – over ninety percent living within six miles of Smithfield Market. Peabody also provides a range of community programmes for their residents and neighbourhoods, including employment and training programmes; health and well-being initiatives; activities for younger and older people; welfare benefits advice and financial inclusion and family support programmes.
A small stone in the central aisle of the nave in Westminster Abbey commemorates the temporary burial of George Peabody for one month from November 12th to December 11th 1869 before his remains were removed to his native country and home town, Danvers, now Peabody, in Massachusetts.
