A service of thanksgiving to celebrate the life and work of Sir Simon Milton was held at Westminster Abbey on Monday 31st October at 12 noon.

Sir Simon Milton, who died on 11th April 2011, was Deputy Mayor of London and a former Leader of Westminster City Council and former chairman of the Local Government Association.

He was educated at St Paul's school, Hammersmith, and read history at Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge, where he was chairman of the university's Conservative Association and president of the Cambridge Union. He took a master's degree in professional studies at Cornell University, New York.

He was elected to Westminster city council in 1988, serving on a number of committees before becoming leader in 2000. He maintained a private sector career within a public relations firm during his early years on the council.

He was knighted for services to local government in 2006, and in 2007 he became chairman of the Local Government Association. A year later he joined the Greater London Authority as a deputy mayor for planning and policy and latterly as Chief of Staff to the Mayor, Boris Johnson.
