A Service of Thanksgiving for the Life of Winston S. Churchill was held at St Margaret’s Church, Westminster Abbey, on Wednesday 9 June.
The service was conducted by the Reverend Robert Wright, Rector of St Margaret’s who said in his Bidding: ‘For 27 years he served as the Member of Parliament for Stretford and then Davyhulme. At a young age he became well known as an aviator, war correspondent, and author, he loved writing and public speaking and was acclaimed for his lectures and broadcasts in the United States where he forged many friendships. A courageous and generous man, Winston was devoted to his family and immensely proud of his historic lineage.’
The Address was given by the Right Honourable The Lord Parkinson.
Jennie Repard read Farewell My Friends by Rabindranath Tagore, The Lady Soames read Winston Churchill’sTo Be Sent To Mrs Churchill In The Event Of My Death, 17 July 1915 , and Randolph Churchill read Revelation 21: 1-7.
Prayers were led by the Reverend Michael Macey, Minor Canon of Westminster.
The service was sung by the Choir of St Margaret’s Church conducted by Aidan Oliver, Director of Music. Thomas Trotter played the organ. The Brass Quintet of The Band of Her Majesty’s Royal Marines played before the service.
