A Service to Celebrate the 125th Anniversary of the Soldiers, Sailors, Airmens and Families Association (SSAFA) Forces Help

Westminster Abbey held a Service to Celebrate the 125th Anniversary of the Soldiers, Sailors, Airmens and Families Association on Thursday 18 February 2010 at 11am.

SSAFA was founded in 1885 by Major Gildea who recognised that when armed forces went away to fight in conflicts – such as the Boer War in his time – the welfare of families left at home should not be neglected.

The work of SSAFA has continued ever since and today it helps and supports those who serve in the country’’s armed forces and those who used to serve - even if it was only for a single day. The organisation also cares for the families of both.

Last year alone, SSAFA’s professional staff and trained volunteers provided a reliable, caring and trusted service to more than 50,000 people.
