Samuel Johnson Tercentenary 2009

Samuel Johnson (1709-1784) – popularly known as Dr Johnson - rose from humble beginnings as the son of a Lichfield bookseller to become one of the most celebrated literary figures of his day, immortalised in his great friend James Boswell’s biography, Life of Samuel Johnson. His contribution to the nation’s cultural life was recognised with a funeral and burial in Westminster Abbey on 20 December 1784.

The career of this great man of letters, as poet, biographer, lexicographer, essayist, editor, reviewer and publisher will be remembered on Thursday 15 October in the tercentenary year of his birth with a special evening of readings at Westminster Abbey followed by a reception in Poets’ Corner, near Johnson’s grave.

Johnson scholars and enthusiasts Lance Pierson, Karin Fernald, Michael Bundock and David Nokes will bring his famous and some lesser known works to life, capturing the incisive wit and intellectual insight, which so enthralled 18th century society but which remain as vibrant and pertinent as ever today.

The evening is part of the Samuel Johnson Tercentenary 2009: www.johnson2009.org
