60TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE CORONATION

Westminster Abbey is to mark the 60th anniversary of Her Majesty The Queen’s Coronation in 2013 with a Service of Celebration and a series of special events. The Queen succeeded King George VI on 6th February 1952 when she was twenty-five years old, but it was not until nearly eighteen months later that the young Queen was crowned at Westminster Abbey on 2nd June 1953.

A Service of Celebration attended by Her Majesty The Queen and His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh, and Members of the Royal Family will take place on Tuesday 4th June at 11.00am. 

Coronation! A new photographic exhibition in partnership with Getty Images opens in the Chapter House on 6th May and runs until 27th September 2013.

Vivat Regina! A public lecture will be given by the Rt Revd and Rt Hon Dr Richard Chartres, KCVO, Bishop of London on 7th June at 6.30pm.

Gala Concert with the Choir of Westminster Abbey, conducted by Organist and Master of the Choristers James O’Donnell will be performed on 13th June at 7.00pm.

60 Chairs for 60 Years. A rare collection of Coronation Chair miniatures, including silver charms, wooden and gold-plated replica chairs, which were made at the time of the 1953 Coronation on display in the Abbey's museum from 6th May to 27th September 2013.

Picture the Procession. An exhibition of a community-led photography project by Westminster Adult Education Services featuring pictures of Westminster Abbey and the Tower of London, in St Margaret’s Church during normal opening hours from 27th May - 28th June.
