A Service of Thanksgiving to celebrate the Life and Work of Major Henry Herbert Kitchener, 3rd Earl Kitchener of Khartoum DL TD

A service to celebrate the life and work of the 3rd Earl Kitchener was held in St Margaret’s Church, Westminster Abbey on Thursday 7th June 2012 at 12.00 noon

Major Henry Herbert Kitchener, 3rd Earl Kitchener DL TD was born on 24th February 1919 and died on 16th December 2011, aged 92.

He was the son of Captain Henry Franklin Chevallier Kitchener, Viscount Broome, only son of Henry Kitchener, 2nd Earl Kitchener. His great-uncle was the renowned military commander Herbert Kitchener, 1st Earl Kitchener.

Lord Kitchener was educated at Winchester and read maths and physics at Trinity College, Cambridge.  He served in the Royal Corps of Signals, retiring with the rank of major, and was President of the Lord Kitchener National Memorial Fund from 1950 until his death. In 1972, he served as Deputy Lieutenant of Cheshire. He was a Vice President of The Western Front Association and made a significant contribution to the Territorial Army, for which he was awarded the Territorial Decoration (TD). In 2005, he was awarded the Grand Cross of the Royal Confraternity of Sao Teotonio.

Lord Kitchener was President and a Trustee of the Institute for Food Brain and Behaviour (formerly Natural Justice) a UK charity conducting scientific research into the effects of nutrition on brain function and behaviour.  He was also a committed supporter of the organic movement and was president of the charity Garden Organic (formerly the Henry Doubleday Research Association - HDRA) from 1973 until 2008. 

He is survived by his sister Lady Kenya and his niece Lady Fellowes of West Stafford.
