Annual Day of Prayer: A Fragile Grace

17 March 2012 at 10:00 am

A day of reflection led by Sister Meg Evening

Sister Meg was born of missionary parents working in the Congo, but brought up in a ‘Home for Missionaries’ Children’ in the UK, and in the Baptist tradition to which she owes so much for its strong emphasis on commitment and the Biblical foundation it gave her. Originally a teacher, she trained at Selly Oak for missionary service and was seconded for two years to work as a Travelling Secretary on the staff of the Student Christian Movement, before herself going to the Congo (Zaire) to teach. On return she taught in two Grammar Schools, continued theological study at Kings College, and then taught at a College of Education before joining the Novitiate of the Anglican Community of St Mary the Virgin in 1973. During her 38 years in CSMV, apart from living for some years at the Mother House, she was posted to various branch houses in the UK and also to Botswana and South Africa, both of which she loved. There followed three years in Sheffield sharing in the work of the Spirituality Centre at Whirlow Grange, and then a short while at St Katharine’s House in Wantage – a home for retired people.

Now living in Salisbury, she has renewed her Consecration as a Religious and is supported pastorally by a Guardian of her vow and the Single Consecrated Life network with which she is linked. Despite physical disabilities, she is able to continue a ministry of spiritual direction and retreat work and is the author of a number of books on prayer and spirituality.
