Description

A Service of Thanksgiving for the Life and Work of the Rt Hon Lord Mayhew of Twysden PC, QC, DL will be held at St Margaret's Church, Westminster Abbey at Noon on Thursday 2nd March 2017.

Patrick Mayhew was born in September 1929. He was educated at Tonbridge and Balliol College, Oxford, and served in the 4th/7th Royal Dragoon Guards. He was called to the Bar in 1955 and was appointed QC in 1972.

He served as the Conservative Member of Parliament for Tunbridge Wells for 23 years, and held posts including attorney-general under Margaret Thatcher. He served in John Major's 1991 Gulf War Cabinet, before being appointed Secretary of State for Northern Ireland in 1992, laying much of the groundwork for the eventual peace process.

After leaving the Commons, he received a life peerage. He died in June 2016 at the age of 86, and is survived by his wife Jean and their four sons.
