Even with a regular annual maintenance programme and on-going support from the Abbey, St Margaret's cannot overcome the natural deterioration of materials that make up its fabric, nor control the environment. It is now our generation’s turn to care for and help with the current era of vital repairs and maintenance. This work can no longer wait without putting its structure and the public at risk.

Please help us to raise £2 million to ensure that St Margaret’s remains for generations to come.

EXTERNAL RESURFACING

In 1735, the external walls were refaced with Portland
stone. Over the centuries, the iron cramps or pins used to hold the stones in place have rusted and swollen causing pieces of stone (some quite large) to flake and fall off.

SOUTH AISLE ROOF REPLACEMENT

Thermal fatigue, cracking and heavy rain have caused the greatest damage.Also, the trees next to the Church are now twice the height of the roof and when great quantities of leaves fall, the gutters clog and the roof floods.

PINNACLES

The 4 pinnacles of the tower added over 200 years ago have suffered as have the external walls.The iron pins need to be replaced with stainless steel fixings and will enable us to save much of the original stonework.

TOWER/CUPOLA

In 2007, serious wood rot was found in the cupola and was repaired. In the process, the roofs of the tower and surrounding structure (rebuilt in 1735) were found to be defective and in need of repair.

NORTH PORCH TOWER ROOM

This room is currently used for storage. Its refurbishment will enable its use for Sunday school/crèche, community activities and as a disabled access entrance to the Church.

PLINTH REMOVAL

A large area in the south aisle is covered by a bulky and awkward wooden plinth which needs to be removed and replaced with matching Victorian tiles.

ENTRANCE PAVEMENT

The pavement in front of the St Margaret’s and next to the Abbey is cracked and worn and needs to be re-laid.

INTERIOR LIME WASHING

The interior needs to be re-lime washed as the final step of the restoration.This will leave St Margaret’s in a strong, stable and beautiful condition for future generations.
