The Church of England’s General Synod has decided that it will ordain women bishops. But questions still remain.
Does this mean everybody in the Church of England will have to accept women bishops?
What will happen to those who can't?
Can we have a Church of England in which some accept women bishops and some do not?
These are difficult questions on which many Anglicans disagree.
At the start of Christian Unity Week on Monday 18 January 2010 at 6.15pm, Westminster Abbey hosts an evening to discuss the ordination of women as bishops.
Westminster Abbey has a distinctive role within the Church of England through its status as a Royal Peculiar making it an ideal place for all to listen and share thoughts about the way forward.
‘A Westminster Conversation: Women Bishops – Where Does the Church of England go from here?’ will hear contributions from:
Bishop John Gladwin, former Bishop of Chelmsford
Bishop Martyn Jarrett, Bishop of Beverley
Reverend Dr Michael Ovey, Principal, Oak Hill Theological College
Reverend Lucy Winkett, Canon Precentor, St Pau’s Cathedral
Written questions from the audience will follow.
The Reverend Dr Jane Hedges, Canon Steward, Westminster Abbey will chair the evening.
Admission is free but booking in advance is required. Bookings: events@westminster-abbey.org
