Walter Mortimer

In the north choir aisle of Westminster Abbey, just inside the gates from the nave, is the grave of Walter Mortimer or Mortimore. The inscription reads:

Here lieth interr'd the body of Walter Mortimore, Gent. who departed this life on the 8th day of August 1684 in the 38th year of his age.

There is a worn coat of arms sculpted at the top of the stone. His will showed him to be Walter Mortimer of St Martin in the Fields parish. He had two brothers John and Richard and bequeathed money for building a new college near Chelsea. He appears to have been unmarried.
