Smalbroke Family

In the south cloister of Westminster Abbey is the grave of three members of the Smalbroke family. The grave inscription reads:

Here lyeth the body of Catherine Smalbroke, widow of the Right Reverend Richard Smalbroke D.D. late Lord Bishop of Lichfield and Coventry. She died the ninth day of March 1765 in the 81 year of her age. Also the body of William Smalbroke their third son who died the 9 day of June 1797 aged 79 years. Also the body of Richard Smalbroke LL.D. Chancellor of the diocese of Lichfield and Coventry died May 8th 1805 aged 89 years

Catherine's husband had died in 1749. Willliam was principal Registrar of the diocese of Lichfield and Coventry and died unmarried at his house in Parliament Street, Westminster. Richard the younger succeeded his brother Thomas as Chancellor of the said diocese in 1778 having held the post jointly with him since 1742. He died unmarried at his house in Piccadilly. Another brother was the Reverend Dr Samuel Smalbroke.
