Gilbert Wimberley

The Reverend Dr Gilbert Wimberley or Wymberley was minister at St Margaret's church Westminster from 1630 and was buried in the middle part of the chancel of the church on 29th November 1653 with his wife and four children. His gravestone no longer remains. He was born in 1594 a son of Thomas Wimberley of Spalding in Lincolnshire and his wife Frances (Bevile). His brothers Bevil and John were with him at Cambridge university. After serving as a rector in parishes in Suffolk and Berkshire he was appointed a prebendary of Wells cathedral, chaplain to the King and prebendary of Westminster in 1643. The name of his first wife is not known but his second was Martha Welby whom he married in 1632. They had sons Thomas (d.1649) and Gilbert (died 1659) and a daughter Anne. After Martha's death he married Alice Bridges in 1648. She had been baptised at the church in 1617 and was buried with him in 1695. During the Commonwealth period he was imprisoned and his house plundered.

Several members of his family are buried at Pinchbeck in Lincolnshire.
