Enoch Hawkins

Enoch Hawkins, the "finest alto singer of his day", was buried in the west cloister of Westminster Abbey on 26th January 1847. The original memorial on the wall nearby was replaced by the present black marble tablet in 1960. The inscription reads:

Sacred to the memory of Enoch Hawkins Esquire, who departed this life 9 January 1847 aged 50 years. Gentleman of Her Majesty's Chapel Royal, Vicar Choral of this Collegiate Church, President of the Adelphi Glee Club whose members erected this tablet in friendship and admiration.

He was a Lay Vicar at the Abbey from 1838 to 1846 and sang at Queen Victoria's coronation. Jessie Hawkins administered his will.
