History

The grave of Edward, 3rd Lord Herbert of Cherbury is in St Edmund's chapel in Westminster Abbey. The stone has been re-cut and reads:

"Edward Lord Herbert Baron of Cherbury in England and Castle Island in Ireland dyed on ye 9th of December 1678 in ye 46th year of his age and lyes buryed beneath this stone. Grandson of the famous Lord Herbert".

Above the inscription is a coronet above an uninscribed shield with the motto "Fortitudine et Prudentia". In an Abbey guide book of 1711 the coat of arms "party per pale, three lions rampant" is mentioned as being on the stone.

He was born in 1630, the eldest son of Richard, 2nd Lord Herbert and his wife Lady Mary (Egerton). He was a Royalist and joined Sir George Booth in declaring for Charles II in 1659. He became custos rotulorum for the Welsh counties of Montgomery and Denbigh. His first wife was Anne Middleton and his second Elizabeth Brydges but he had no children and the title passed to his brother Henry.
